Shakespeare was a great writer and had many different themes in the play Romeo and Juliet. He had different meanings to this play and different universal themes. Many still go on today.
Shakespeare's meaning of the play Romeo and Juliet was very significant. The meaning of the play is love and how love is not fair. Things do not always go right for you and you have to make decisions based on the consequences. An example of how love is not fair is when Romeo and Juliet fall in love and finally realize what family the other belongs to they know that their love is forbidden, even after they know their families hate each other they decide to get married. After they were married Romeo gets banished from Verona, leaving the couple not being able to see each other. Romeo finds out Juliet is "dead" and goes back to Verona to see for himself, when he sees she is "dead" he drinks the poison, and as he does that she wakes up to find him dying so she kills herself. There love life was not fair. They were with each other only four times. They did not get to spend their lives together the way that they intended to. Shakespeare's message to the readers of his play was not to get your hopes up too much because life doesn't turn out the way you want it to most of the time. He wanted his readers to know that love and life are tough but we can get through the problems that we all have to make our life be the best that it can be. The theme of love is universal to this day. People have been falling in love and love each other for many years. People world wide love each other and fall in love with some one. Love has been around for thousands of years and probably will never stop.
